WHMIS for Contractors
Contractors are exposed to a huge range of hazardous materials at the various job sites where they work. Because contractors change workplaces so frequently, they are exposed to a greater number and variety of chemical hazards than workers in most other industries. These hazards can range from paints, solvents, glues, lubricants, and sealants to gasoline and other petroleum based products – to name just a few. This array of chemical hazards can come in any form, with different potential routes of exposure. Gases and vapor fumes can be inhaled and cause asphyxiation and other respiratory problems, while liquids and dusts can cause poisoning, burns, and other serious injuries or even death.
Contractors Need WHMIS Training
The best way for contractors to protect themselves on the job is to go through WHMIS training, and this education is in fact not just recommended but required for most contractors. In addition to general WHMIS training, most contractors will also need to go through workplace specific training. General WHMIS training ensures that the contractor is familiar with general risks and can understand and respond to GHS standardized labels and SDSs. Workplace specific training ensures that the contractor is familiar with the specific chemicals they will work with, as well as emergency procedures and any required personal protection equipment they might need.
