WHMIS is in effect in every part of Canada, but every province has implemented it differently. Employer requirements differ by region.

Yes, WHMIS is a law. Employers are legally obligated and liable for ensuring that all workers are trained for WHMIS 2015 if they are exposed or likely to be exposed to hazardous materials at the workplace.

Does WHMIS training expire? How often does WHMIS training need to be done?

WHMIS training does not legally expire, but it is generally recommended that employees receive WHMIS training annually, or at the very longest, every three years. Employees should receive new WHMIS training any time new information or chemicals are introduced to the workplace. A WHMIS365 course certificate is valid for 3 years.

How long does it take to do WHMIS?

The WHMIS course can normally be completed in about 45 minutes or an hour. But there is no time limit to the training, and you are able to pause and resume the course at your own discretion to train at your own pace.
